The Great Fire of London In the early morning hours, the Great Fire of London breaks out in the house of King Charles II’s baker on Pudding Lane near London Bridge. It soon spread to Thames Street, where warehouses filled with combustibles and a strong easterly wind transformed the blaze into an inferno. When the Great Fire finally was extinguished on September 6, more than four-fifths of London was destroyed. Miraculously, only 16 people were known to have died. The Great Fire of London was a disaster waiting to happen. London of 1666 was a city of medieval houses made mostly of oak timber. Some of the poorer houses had walls covered with tar, which kept out the rain but made the structures more vulnerable to fire. Streets were narrow, houses were crowded together, and the firefighting methods of the day consisted of neighborhood bucket brigades armed with pails of water and primitive hand pumps. Headless statue of Athena Art of Hadrian’s Villa: H eadless Statue of Athena is made of Luna marble and this marvelous piece from Hadrian’s Villa is a headless statue of Athena of theVescovali-Arezzo Type. The Headless statue of Athena was presumably made according to a Greek model attributed to Praxiteles` workshop.A large number of Roman copies have survived and one complete figure of this type can be seen in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Two other near complete copies are housed in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridgeas well as in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford . The statue of goddess is depicted wrapped in a himation(cloak).She stands with her left hand resting on her hip and would have carried a spear in her lost right hand. She wears her aegis bordered with small snakes over the shoulders . THE WAY OF THE SHOGUN   The Way of the Shogun was hiking into the Kiso Mountains of Japan and it also had the dreamlike beauty of an anime fantasy. In 1810 ,A Japanese guidebook was written included dire warnings about supernatural threats,Solitary wayfarers met on remote trails might really be ghost,or magical animals in human form.     For two centuries the Nakasendo Way was a major pedestrian route that connected a string of villages providing lodging and sustenance for the shoguns, retainers and daimyo, or feudal lords, travelling between Tokyo and Kyoto. The trail and its villages were largely abandoned in the late 1800s as the power of the shoguns faded and as travellers between the two capitals began making the trek by train or automobile. But in the 1960s Tsugamo and several other villages along the route began campaigns of rediscovery.
